We use the fresh root of turmeric in our Navy Strength Gin rather than the dried, deep orange powder often used in cooking.
Related to both ginger and cardamom, turmeric is native to southern India.
It was first used as a dye, then later for its medicinal properties as well as a spicing agent in foods across South Asia and the Middle East.
The fragrance is reminiscent of dill, carrot, cucumber… and fresh dirt. The result is that it adds a weight and a lovely earthiness to the palate.
